How Red Light Therapy Works: Wavelengths
Red light therapy, also called photobiomodulation or low-level light therapy, uses LEDs or low-power lasers in two bands:
| Light | Typical wavelengths | How deep | Most studied for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Red | about 630–670 nm | Skin | Skin quality, fine lines, wound healing |
| Near-infrared | about 800–880 nm | Deeper tissue: muscle, joints | Muscle recovery, joint and muscle pain |
The light is absorbed by the mitochondria in your cells, where it may support energy production; that is the proposed reason for its effects on skin and tissue repair. It isn't UV light and doesn't tan or burn the skin.
