What Your Lymphatic System Does

The lymphatic system is a network of vessels and lymph nodes that collects excess fluid, called lymph, from your tissues and returns it to the bloodstream. Lymph nodes filter that fluid and are part of the immune system. Unlike blood, lymph has no pump of its own: it moves with muscle activity, breathing and gentle pressure on the skin, which is why sitting all day, long flights, heat or a salty dinner can leave you feeling puffy.

Lymphatic drainage massage uses that last route. Light, rhythmic strokes stretch the skin in the direction of the lymph nodes and may help fluid move on, so puffiness and heaviness ease. It works with your circulation and immune system rather than “boosting” them: there is no good evidence that a session strengthens immunity or removes toxins in healthy people.
